Students settle at their group table with a healthy snack.
At snack time, the students and volunteers have time to talk.
After clearing up, students go to the gym or outside for sports activities.
Back inside, students take part in workshops or activities.
Sometimes a guest community partner will lead a session with the students.
Off-campus field trips may be occasionally offered as well.

Junior Leadership Mentor Program
Discover the developmental benefits of joining our Junior Leadership Mentor Program.
What is the Junior Leadership Mentor Program?
As students from Chilliwack Elementary Schools began graduating from our free, fun, and safe after school environment, we saw an awesome opportunity to develop their leadership skills, and help them give back to the community.
The Junior Leadership Mentor Program teaches young people about responsibility, accountability, friendship, and healthy relationships. Taking an active role in the Afternoon Adventures sessions, Junior Leaders help plan and deliver sessions, alongside positively engaging with the participants.
Why become a Junior Leader?
Having graduated from our program, our Junior Leaders have already experienced the positive relationships, learning opportunities, and fun activities on offer at Afternoon Adventures.
They’ll already have developed positive relationships with program leaders, making the transition from attendant to leader much easier.
More than that, Junior Leaders already understand that our program promotes wellbeing for families without access to traditional after school care,
And they also see how the work we do can help protect kids against vulnerability.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I enroll my child in your program?
Please check to see if our program is offered at the school your child attends. Afternoon Adventures works closely with the school administration and provides student registration opportunities at the beginning of each school year. Please contact your school office or send us an email at info@afternoonadventures.ca
Is there any cost involved for my child to participate?
Afternoon Adventures programs are free of cost for families, including all activities, supplies, workshops and field trips.
Is your program considered a drop-in program?
No, it is not. Your child will register for the year. Once our registration capacity is reached at the beginning of the school year, we start a waitlist and will re-visit it halfway through the year (January) to see if we can place your child at that time.
What days are your programs offered at and what are the hours of operation?
We have multiple programs offered at several local elementary and middle schools. All our programs start right after the end of day bell rings, and run for two hours. Please contact your school office or send us an email at info@afternoonadventures.ca to obtain days and times for your particular school. We only offer our programs on days that the school is in session, so there are no programs during holidays, on staff or pro-d-days.
Who will hang out with my child at your program?
Our Afternoon Adventures programs are provided by teams of volunteers from local churches under the direction of our Afternoon Adventures Director. All our volunteers and leaders have a current criminal record check prior to volunteering on our teams. Each team has a First Aid and Food Safety registered volunteer.
Do you provide snacks?
Yes, snack time is an important part of our program and nutritious snacks are provided in abundance. We consider the snack time a great opportunity to unwind, engage, and transition from school time to our afterschool program while enjoying their snacks. Middle school students are often asked to help prepare the snacks for the afternoon which allows for great interaction between peers and volunteers as well give opportunity to learn about healthy snack and food preparation.
Our volunteers are aware of your child’s allergies (indicated on the student registration form) and we are diligent to make sure your child will receive a substitute snack. We will not offer any snacks that are not allowed e.g. peanut butter restrictions
What does a program day look like at Afternoon Adventures?
When the bell rings to signal the end of the school day, Afternoon Adventures’ students promptly make their way to the assigned program room and check in with their program leaders. Once everyone is checked in and settled at their group table, the room fills with laughter, sharing and connecting while the students enjoy a healthy snack. The students help with cleaning up before heading outside for some fresh air where they play games, relax on the swings, play gaga-ball or hang out with friends and volunteers. Back inside, the students may be directed to separate rooms where they will participate in a variety of activities and workshops.
These include, but are not limited to, art, sports, cooking and baking, woodworking, painting, games, and crafts. Sometimes a community partner is invited to share with the students, whether it be an RCMP, fire fighter, or a businessperson with a special hobby or skill. As the program winds down for the day, students and volunteers clean up and tidy the rooms. Students are dismissed at the door under the supervision of volunteers and reunited with their waiting parents/guardians.
Our middle school programs follow this structure but with much more input from students on what activities are offered. Engagement between students and volunteers is an important part of supporting the students at this age.
Does your program have an open house or any other ways to get to know the leaders and volunteers?
Great question. Because all our programs have different leaders it would be best to contact your program leader or email us at info@afternoonadventures.ca for more information. Several programs have an open house where the parents can come and connect.
Some programs host amazing family events like Christmas Banquets for the whole family, year end family BBQ’s, car derby races and much more. These are great opportunities for all to connect.
Does your program stay at the school or are off campus fieldtrips part of your program as well?
Over all our programs are offered at the school, however we do go occasionally leave the school premises and venture out off campus. Part of your child’s registration form is to provide permission for your child to participate in these events. If you have any questions please contact your program leader or email us at info@afternoonadventures.ca
What happens is my child can’t make it?
Depending on the reason, we will first connect with the school office after we check in the students and miss your child. If your child has returned home during the school day we will be notified by the school If you know ahead of time that your child wont be able to come, please contact the program leader. If we don’t hear from you and your child has been absent for 3 consecutive weeks, the program leader will contact you to discuss why your child hasn’t been attending the program.
If your child is no longer interested in participating, we will remove your child from our list and allow a student on the waitlist to take that spot.
Since when has Afternoon Adventures been offered at the schools?
We have offered our programs since September 2011 with great support from many community partners. Our programs have the support of the local school district and adhere to the districts’ policies regarding volunteering in the school.
