Volunteer Stories
Eat, Drink, And Be Happy With Afternoon Adventures
“I realized very early the power of food evokes memory, to bring people together, to transport you to other places and I wanted to be a part of that.” José Andres Puerta
Snack time has become a highlight for the students in Afternoon Adventures at Bernard Elementary. Sitting down with friends, eating together, laughing, sharing stories, builds community and refreshes the body and soul. This is so true for children, also. It has been my privilege to lead our Afternoon Adventures snack team at Bernard Elementary for the past 6 years.
I’ve tried to inspire and encourage our team of 20 volunteers, together we do more than just provide a snack for the students in the program. These volunteers have done an exceptional job coming up with creative, exciting, colourful, nutritious – and sometimes not so nutritious – snacks each week. Many of these kids rely on these snacks as a supplement towards their daily nutrition. For some kids this may be their last meal of the day.
When I ask myself, “Why do I do this?” The answer is simple. The kids! I do it for the kids. When I hear the kids say, “Can I have more?” or “It’s delicious! Best cookies ever!” I know they love it. That inspires me to keep on serving these kids. One child at a time, One school at a time, One community at a time.
“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.” Mother Teresa Blessings, Marilee D.
